I've tried getting fee-based advice (hourly fee) from a Fiduciary and CPA and found them to be less than helpful. The purpose of the consults was for the purpose of dealing with VTI/VXUS in **taxable** accounts and minimize my tax burden in the future. Their advice was not based on any specific analysis or crunching of my numbers, but vague gut feelings and pre-determined biases. One of the guys couldn't shut up about Roth accounts - he was going to say that no matter what I told him. I'm curious what your experiences have been? Did they actually help you?
“I met with a financial planner (fee-based, fiduciary) 2 years ago for a retirement preparedness review. My experience was mixed. I thought I paid more than the advice was worth, but I walked away not only with confidence in my retirement readiness but also with the understanding that I could spend significantly more in retirement than I had imagined. That last perspective was really an eye-opener for me, so it had some value. On its own, it wasn't enough to persuade me, but it gave me greater confidence in the various retirement calculators that were broadcasting a similar message. (I admit I am still having a hard time switching gears to decumulation.) However, I immediately told my work colleagues nearing retirement age about the experience and advised against paying fees for what the online tools and institutionally-compensated advisors at Fidelity were doing for us for free.”
