48 year old looking for recommendations on whether the way I am investing makes sense. My portfolio is with Fidelity, and my employer does not allow any 401(k) funds or ETFs outside of their curated options. I started learning about investing only 4–5 years ago and still have a long way to go. For the next 4–5 years, my biggest expenses, apart from regular living and mortgage costs, will be fully funding my children’s college tuition. I would like to open a brokerage account with around $10k, but I am unsure what the best portfolio mix would be for my age. I hope to retire around age 63. I am glad that I started self-learning, even though it was late in my life. At least I can educate my children better. Thank you !

“Here's Vangaurd TDF 2040: https://investor.vanguard.com/investment-products/mutual-funds/profile/vforx#price . Currently 24% bonds. I can't tell from the percentages how much you have in dollar amounts, so I can't calculate your overall allocation. But bonds only in the 401k and only at 8% seems low. The Roth IRA should have zero cash in it, sitting doing nothing. No, don't wait for a dip, just put it in now. Your fund choices are all good except NVDA (but, you do you with small amounts of money you can afford to lose) and QQQM which is fundamentally nonsense. For money in the brokerage that you want to use in retirement, invest it the same way as your other retirement accounts.”
