I recently read the Bogleheads guide and maxed out my HSA and personal IRA for last year and this year. The company I work for (4 employees) doesn’t offer a 401(k). I’m going to try and talk them into setting one up, (looks like there are programs to help small businesses). I have $250k in a HYSA so I can live on that and hopefully have them contribute 100% of my checks into the 401(k) until the limit this year? What about next year? Keep enough cash so I can do that again next year or invest it now in a taxed account immediately? I have at least $150k I can invest now after taking into account a sizable emergency fund and money set aside for my child’s tuition (no I never set up a 529) she has 3 years left. I also have a pretty good savings rate (but I haven’t done the math to determine the numbers). I’m lazy at adulting but good at not spending money. Thanks
“You've lost a bit of time in the market, but sounds like you're taking the aggressive steps to catch up. Good for you for saving well up to this point, even if it wasn't optimal. Don't beat yourself up for lost time, plenty of people figure it out later than you, if at all. Just focus on moving forward and teach your kid to start investing early :) I would put the 150K into a taxable brokerage account. Just buy VT. Probability wise, the best thing to do is to buy in all at once. But this is literally your life savings, and you only get to do it once--life isn't a monte carlo simulation. I personally would buy $25K-50K every few months over the course of a year at regular intervals until it's all invested. Best of luck!”
